The exhibition at Tate Britain will be accompanied by a major BBC Four TV series, also called Art and the 60s, which is part of BBC Four's Summer in the Sixties season. It tells the extraordinary story of London's art world in the Sixties through the era's artists, collectors and gallery owners themselves. This is a three-part series and each of the three films forming Art and the 60s highlights a different aspect of this era.

With its tale of two influential dealers, Kasmin and Robert Fraser, Episode one, entitled Groovy Galleries, most closely conjures up the Sixties of folklore. Episode two, entitled From Bronze to Baked Beans, tells the story of St Martin's School of Art, where the seeds of today's contemporary art were sown. Episode three, Politics and Performance, considers those artists working outside the commercial art world whose stance reflected the countercultural politics of the time.

The first programme is on Thursday 1 July 2004 at 9pm on BBC Four. After its BBC Four premiere the series will air on BBC Two. The Tate Britain exhibition and BBC Four series have been developed in close collaboration.
