1981
- Exhibits recent bronze works at Acquavella Gallery, New York and at Kenwood House, London.

- Makes large series of relief sculptures in handmade paper, at Tyler Graphics, New York.
1982
- Founds the Triangle Workshop for painters and sculptures with Robert Loder.
1984
- Completes first architectural sculpture Child’s Tower Room.

- Solo exhibition at Serpentine Gallery, London.
1985
- Buys a field in New York state and builds a barn for use as a US studio.

- Visits Greece for the first time.
1986
- Completes a series of sculptures inspired by Greek pediments.
1987
- Participates in a Triangle workshop in Barcelona and starts a series, exploring the idea of drawing in sculpture.

- Knighted in the Queen's Birthday Honours.
1988
- Starts ‘Catalan’ series: table sculptures made from steel elements.
1989
- Begins working on ‘Cascades’ a series of table sculptures, which involve the floor and the wall.

- Retrospective exhibition of sculptures at Walker Hill Art Center, Seoul, the first time a living British sculptor
has exhibited in Korea; he travels to Korea and India.
