  • Born 8 March in New Malden, Surrey.
1937-42
  • Attends Charterhouse school, Surrey.
1942-44
  • Reads engineering at Christ's College, University of Cambridge; obtains an MA.

  • Studies sculpture at Farnham School of Art during vacations.
1944-46
  • Serves in Fleet Air Arm of Royal Navy as an Air Engineer Officer.
1946
  • Attends Regent Street Polytechnic and studies sculpture.
1947-52
  • Attends Royal Academy Schools in London.
1949
  • Marries Sheila Girling, a painter and a fellow student at the Royal Academy Schools.
1951
  • First son Timothy is born.

  • Caro begins work as Henry Moore’s part-time assistant.

  • Starts teaching part-time at St Martin’s School of Art, London.
1954
  • Moves family to North London and sets up studio in his one-car garage.
1956
  • First solo exhibition at Galleria del Naviglio, Milan.
1957
  • First solo exhibition in London held at Gimpel Fils.
1958
  • Second son, Paul, is born.
1959
  • Awarded the Sculpture Prize at the First Paris Biennale for Young Artists.

  • Clement Greenberg visits his studio and their conversation prompts Caro to experiment with non-figurative sculpture.
