THE MAKING OF MILLBANK STEPS

Caro usually makes his sculptures with the help of production assistants at his Camden studio. However, Millbank Steps had to be constructed off-site because of its ambitious scale; it was built by Messrs William Hare out of 100 tonnes of rusted steel.

These photographs capture three different phases in the making of the work: the preliminary manufacturing of the individual pieces, the assembly and bolting together of the sculpture, and the process of installing them in the Duveen Galleries.
