Today's scene
This picture shows rain falling steadily into the Millstream: the scene we had yesterday. Of course, with the recent spell of dry weather it’s much needed!

The Millstream was the focus for many of Constable’s sketches and paintings. It’s directly in front of Flatford Mill, from where his father Golding Constable managed all his business activities, so it’s easy to understand why it was important to him. A series of sketches and paintings (created over 20 years or more from different angles looking down and across the Millstream) were in effect all reference material for ‘The Hay Wain’, which Constable painted in his London studio in the winter of 1820-1821.

If you wish to see ‘Constable Country’ for yourself why not visit midweek, when it’s not quite so busy. Try coming ‘car free’ too: walking or cycling from Manningtree station is a great way to see the area!
