Introduction to the Exhibition

This exhibition brings together works by French and British artists, some of which have not been seen together for two centuries. It aims to demonstrate the cultural interchange between the two nations, and to investigate the role of British Romanticism in the evolution of French art.

The exhibition examines the period that began with the restoration of the French monarchy in 1815 and ended with the accession of Queen Victoria in Britain in 1837. During these years a profound engagement between these two, previously unsympathetic, schools of painting resulted in innovations that would radically affect the course of modern art in Western Europe.
