A particular feature of the exhibition is the influence on French artists of certain techniques particularly associated with Britain. For example, watercolour, widely seen as 'the English medium', showed the way to a new aesthetic which valued the freedom of the sketch over more highly finished work. At the same time, British printmakers had also developed a range of new techniques which enabled them to cater for a new, mass market for prints, illustrated books and magazines.
