I dipinti raccolti in questa sala mostrano il nuovo e dinamico approccio nei confronti della figura umana e la vita nelle città moderne introdotto in Gran Bretagna dagli artisti Francesi negli anni '70 dell'Ottocento.

Questo fu un decennio di rapidi cambiamenti e innovazioni e un momento in cui la città di Londra si impose come la più grande metropoli mondiale. Sebbene lo spettacolo della città contemporanea attrasse scrittori e artisti Britannici, furono in realtà i Francesi a sviluppare e codificare il linguaggio per la rappresentazione della modernità. Quando le loro vibranti e sorprendenti immagini divennero popolari in Gran Bretagna, esse scioccarono e allo stesso tempo ispirarono gli artisti e il pubblico nazionali.
