Degas, Sickert e i Soggetti Moderni

Gli anni '80 dell'Ottocento

Questa sala mostra la straordinaria influenza esercitata da Degas sugli artisti Britannici nel corso degli anni '80 dell'Ottocento.

Sono qui raccolte opere di Degas ben conosciute nel paese insieme a lavori di artisti Britannici contemporanei. Tra questi ultimi il più importante fu Walter Richard Sickert, artista che rispose nel modo più originale alle innovazioni introdotte dall'artista Francese. La giustapposizione dei loro dipinti mostra la reciproca condivisione dei medesimi interessi culturali, quali il teatro, e gli inusuali effetti luministici. Dalle parole dello stesso Degas proviene la seguente affermazione: 'Crea un effetto reale usando mezzi illusori'.
