James Gillray: The Art of Caricature

Shakespeare - Sacrificed; - or - The Offering to Avarice (7)

Area 7

Half hidden behind the billowing smoke coming from the burning pile of Shakespeare's play's, is a statue of the great writer himself, although only the legs are visible. (The statue itself, by Louis-François Roubilliac, is now on display in the new British Library). Gillray is suggesting that Boydell's project obscures, rather than illuminates or celebrates, Shakespeare's plays.
