Shakespeare - Sacrificed; - or - The Offering to Avarice (8)
|

|
This figure, who is fanning the flames of the pile
of burning copies of Shakespeare's plays, is a parody
of the Fool from Benjamin West's painting of King Lear,
which was commissioned by John Boydell for his Shakespeare
Gallery. An engraving by William Sharp after this painting
is included in the exhibition; the print was one of
the few engravings for the Shakespeare Gallery that
was considered to be a success.
