Cornelius Varley knew Girtin's work through his connection with their patron, Thomas Monro. He was particularly impressed by Girtin's commitment to sketching in colour on the spot. He visited some of the same locations that Girtin sketched on his Welsh tour, and produced similar rapid colour studies. The radical simplification of form and the unfinished foreground of this view are close in spirit to Girtin's sketches.
