This work resulted from Girtin's first sketching tour, in the summer of 1794. He visited a number of cathedral cities in the Midlands with James Moore, as a result of which he produced a series of watercolours for Moore and other patrons with antiquarian interests. In this drawing he has carefully recorded every architectural detail, and chosen a viewpoint which shows off the cathedral's unique feature: its three spires.
