This watercolour was based on a sketch Girtin made while he was touring north Wales in 1798. Girtin has produced a highly compressed composition, including just a glimpse of the sky, and dramatising the height of the rocks and the sublime power of the water as it bears down towards the shepherd and his flock in the fields below.
