The spectacular view from the heights above the Avon Gorge was popular with eighteenth-century travellers. Many tourists chose to visit the scene at twilight to increase the drama of the view. Quarrying activities had revealed a stone of a vivid reddish hue that showed up strongly in the evening light. This means that the rather lurid colour effects shown by Girtin were in fact accurate.
