Room 7 Arrow Right The White House at Chelsea

This view of the Thames at dusk has always been famous for the economy with which it evokes a quiet reflective mood. This is made more poignant by our knowledge that the magical way in which the setting sun has lit up a nondescript building will quickly pass. Girtin captured the effect by leaving the off-white paper untouched and adding a little yellow as contrast. Strictly speaking, the work shows Chelsea Reach and the 'white house' is actually in Battersea.
