 Room 4: Works on Paper

This room contains a selection of Fulton's work on paper, including books from 1971 to the present day, mailing cards and prints. In Fulton's mind there is no hierarchy to the presentation of his work; all media can represent the essential characteristics of a walk. As he has said: 'For me, they're all equal. A mailing card with a walk text cannot be thought of as a lesser form of life'.

Fulton's first artist's book was Hollow Lane, printed in 1971, which includes photographic works relating to walks in the UK, America, Canada and Iceland. Since then his publications have come to occupy a central role in his oeuvre. The books are frequently published as inexpensive limited editions making his work more available to a wider audience. A number of the books included here, such as Camp Fire, were made to accompany exhibitions, while others, such as Wild Life, were commissioned projects.
