Jeremy Deller and Alan Kane occasionally collaborate to realise specific projects, such as Folk archive, an ongoing project begun in 1999. This represents their joint and separate long-term interests in creative practices and artefacts from outside the art world. Folk archive is an attempt to explore and document such creativity in Britain and Ireland with the aim of celebrating the diversity of these significant cultural activities. An introduction to Folk archive shown here, presents for the first time a few examples of the artists' findings during a year-long search across Britain. These include, for instance, meticulously crafted objects obtained from Womens' Institute bazaars, photographs and video footage documenting fairs, Morris dancing, political demonstrations and performative practices such as tatooing.

The limited display here can only point to the potentially huge scale of Folk archive, a project to which anyone engaged in such a creative activity could contribute. For information about how to participate in the project you are invited to contact the artists through their website at http://www.folkarchive.co.uk or by post at Folk archive, PO Box 29654, London E2 7WG.
