Intelligence: New British Art 2000
6 July - 24 September 2000 Graham Gussin

Born: London, 1960

Graham Gussin has worked in a variety of media, including drawing, painting, sculpture, video and sound installation. For Spill, his first film, the artist released dry ice into a disused building, documenting its movement through the space. The dry ice stealthily occupies the building, appearing to feel out surfaces like an alien intelligence.

Science fiction has often provided a conceptual and visual influence for Gussin's work. Here, for example, the dry ice recalls the mysterious surface of the planet Solaris in Andrei Tarkovsky's 1971 film of the same name. Affected by the peculiar properties of Solaris, cosmonauts experience altered states of mind in which their fantasies and fears become reality, with dire consequences.

Gussin's interest in the romantic landscape tradition informs the way in which he sets out to engage with an audience - like romantic landscape, his work seeks out the viewer's imagination for its completion
