Prunella Clough
Edited by Ben Tufnell. With a contribution by Margaret Garlake.
A private individual who chose to remain out of the limelight and yet was highly admired by her peers, Prunella Clough (1919-99) was one of the best and most original artists to emerge in the second half of the twentieth century. Clough's extraordinary work encompasses 1940s Neo-romanticism, 1950s social realism and, from 1960 onwards, a very personal brand of painterly abstraction. In her paintings, the detritus of street and gutter and manual labour are transformed into images of compelling mystery and beauty.
This publication spans Clough's entire career. With an introduction by Ben Tufnell and an essay by Margaret Garlake, the book also features extracts from interviews with Clough, a seminal essay by the late artist Patrick Heron, and an extensive bibliography.
