Abstraction
During the 1960s and 1970s, Clough’s work became increasingly abstract. Though still drawn from urban life, her images concentrate on textures, colours, shapes and visual memory.

Brown Wall reveals her persistent attraction to the overlooked components of what she called the ‘urbscape’, while Electrical Installation may suggest movement and human presence. Clough admitted that the subdued tonality of her works owed much to the English weather.
Double Diamond is probably inspired by an advertising campaign for the well-known brand of beer of the same name. The pared-down composition explores a number of artistic concepts, such as visual recognition and abstraction, transparency and density, and the tension between three-dimensional space and a flat surface.
