This is another portrait of an African woman
but it is a more modern representation as she
is clad in western clothes. It is interesting how
she looks downwards as if the artist
attempted to capture her 'feelings’. There is a
sense of serenity about her. I think it is a
beautiful painting.
Freddie Booker-Carson, collector
This image is immediately reminiscent of the
Renaissance Madonna. No surprise that the
artist is Italian. What is surprising is how
directly he has recreated the portrait of an
African woman in a deeply familiar European
mode. The downcast eyes, the soulful
expression, even the neat headscarf
announces this image as part of a long
tradition of Madonna worship.
Mike Phillips, curator
I believe that the subject for this painting sat
with tremendous humility. She is revered and
respected and gained her respect through her
actions, her beauty is inconsequential to her
goodness. She is a ‘bella beauty’ in forms and
deeds.
