The title for these drawings comes from the opening stage directions to The Tempest. They are the first series that consciously deal with a more theatrical language, for example, the 'backdrop' or 'stage left' and 'stage right', as opposed to the cinematic space of previous blackboard drawings. The image is constructed as much from the erasure and smudging of the chalk as from the lines themselves.

These drawings were a commission for Sadler's Wells Theatre, London 1999
