Muzi Quawson documents different aspects of American society. After a chance meeting, she became friends with Amanda Jo Williams, who invited Quawson to stay with her family in Woodstock, a town famous for its music festival held in 1969. Today its mythical resonances continue to influence the hippie alternative lifestyles adopted by the locals, including Williams.

Quawson draws upon the style of New American Cinema from the 1970s, in particular Martin Scorsese, and his use of outsider heroes. Pull Back the Shade documents Amanda Jo Williams' relationship with her partner and young daughters with complete candour.
