Live Works: Gerard Byrne

Gerard Byrne: An Exercise for Two Actors and One Listener
Friday 5 May 2006 during Late at Tate Britain
North Duveen galleries

Building upon previous works such as New Sexual Lifestyles that used a roundtable discussion from a 1973 Playboy magazine as the script for a staged debate, Gerard Byrne will present a newly commissioned work with actors. The new work references specific scenarios from popular films as well as Bertolt Brecht‘s acting exercises and uses the milieu of Tate Britain as a backdrop. Byrne’s work tests different representational modes against each other. He juxtaposes the ‘factual’ qualities of photography against the willing suspension of disbelief at stake in theatre.
