Live Works: Olivia Plender

Olivia Plender: MONITOR
Saturday 29 April 2006, 19.30–20.30
North Duveen galleries

Historical research is at the core of Olivia Plender‘s practice. Her works investigate idiosyncratic pockets of forgotten history that sit awkwardly with the way we live now.

For the Tate Triennial, Plender has created a theatre piece based on early BBC TV arts programming such as Monitor, which reveals the authoritative approach that museums and broadcast media use to frame art. This performance is part of an ongoing project. In 2005, Plender staged an ’in conversation’ with Ken Russell, one of Monitor‘s original presenters, where they discussed notions of creative genius and ‘taste’. She also explores these themes in her comic book series The Masterpiece.
