Properties visited by Turner

Petworth House, West Sussex
Luminous landscapes by Turner at Petworth reflect the artist’s friendship with the third Earl of Egremont, who arranged for Turner to have a studio at the house.

Basildon Park, Berkshire
In 1838 Basildon was bought by the Liberal MP James Morrison, who employed his architect-friend J.B. Papworth to complete the neo-classical mansion. This was Basildon’s golden age. A fast train link with London brought many distinguished visitors, J.M.W Turner and Bishop Samuel Wilberforce among them.

Turner's Inspiration

Corfe Castle, Dorset
Although now reduced to broken walls and towers, this architecturally striking monument to the power of medieval kings still dominates the little village huddled below. Corfe was deliberately ruined, leaving only the romantic remains that inspired one of Turner’s evocative watercolours.

Bodiam Castle, East Sussex
The 18th-century bridge across the Rother features in the famous views of the Castle by Turner and others, and it is important to the setting of the castle that it is well maintained and its setting protected.
