Switzerland 1840s
Switzerland drew Turner back year after year during the 1840s. The landscape combined all the elements he loved: mountains, lakes, architecture and beautiful light.
For these Swiss watercolours he used pure washes of strong, vibrant colour on white paper. Often one wash merges into another, creating a sense of indistinctness. But unlike the Venetian watercolours, here the hazy washes are overlaid with more detailed brushwork which creates structure and clarity.
