Ideas Factory: Developing literacy skills through art

Ideas Factory 2005-6

The Ideas Factory programme works with three primary schools in Newham and two in Greenwich. Throughout an academic year, 300 young people from two classes per school work with artists and writers to develop their art and literacy skills.

The young people visit the gallery; teachers take part in continuing professional development and visits are made by Tate to the schools. At the end of the year there is a celebratory family day where the young people exhibit their work at Tate Britain, have fun and show family and friends around the gallery.

Thanks to the young people for their enthusiasm and imagination, and to the school staff, the LEA Advisers, the artists and writers and Tate & Lyle for their commitment to the project.

An Action Research Project took place during 2005-6. Read the report of the research project: A Multimodal Approach to the Ideas Factory Project's Impact on Children's Literacy (PDF format, 2.4MB).
