Turner's Travels

'The year 1797 must have been one of the happiest of Turner's early life. For the first time he got fairly into the north of England, and became acquainted with a kind of scenery which he loved for ever after.'
Philip Gilbert Hamerton, The Life of J.M.W. Turner, 1879

Preparing for the Journey

Turner
JMW Turner

Twenty-two year old JMW Turner still lives in London with his parents at 26 Maiden Lane in Covent Garden. His mother is going mad and has terrible rages. For this reason Turner has spent part of his childhood with relatives in Brentwood and Margate. He has not had much schooling and can neither speak nor write very fluently so don't be surprised if you find spelling mistakes in this text! Turner is frightened of his mother and much closer to his father who is a barber.

__    "Hallo William, wake up, you are starting a big journey later today. Get up and have your breakfast and then let me look at the clothes you need to pack.

Oh goodness no, you haven't got nearly enough clothes there. You'll be away for about eight weeks, you said. You haven't remembered your cravats. And what about your handkerchiefs? You're planning to travel from London to the North of England, a journey of many hundred miles. There won't be many opportunities for laundry. You'd better take all of these."
