Isaac Julien

Julien's films are about memory, fantasy and desire; they focus on the absences and omissions in accepted historical narratives. Acting as writer, director, and sometimes actor in his films, Julien is also a teacher and theorist. His work has been show in various contexts, from television and the cinema to art galleries. His film, The Long Road to Mazatlan, shown in the Turner Prize exhibition of 2001, was made in collaboration with the choreographer Javier de Frutos.

Isaac Julien was born in London, England in 1960, and graduated from St Martin's School of Art in 1984. In 2001, he was shortlisted for his complex, poetic film installations as seen in his exhibitions at Cornerhouse, South London Gallery, and the Victoria Miro Gallery.
