Giuseppe Penone
Shortlisted: 1989

Penone is one of only two non-British artists to have been shortlisted for the Turner Prize; his inclusion in 1989 was part of a move to draw attention to the significant increase in the amount of work by foreign artists being shown in Britain. Penone has an international reputation; he has been associated with the Arte Povera movement in Italy since 1969; his work is also linked to Land art and Process art.
