VerbalEyes: finding a voice through art
VerbalEyes is Tate Britain’s schools outreach project exploring visual and verbal literacy with contemporary practitioners using the Tate collection.
VerbalEyes works with over 300 children and their teachers from five primary and one secondary school in the London boroughs of Newham and Westminster. Two classes from each school work with artists over the course of two weeks, visiting Tate Britain, investigating art and language and creating a final piece of artwork. The final pieces from all the projects are displayed in a special VerbalEyes Exhibition at Tate Britain, which is launched with a celebratory Family Day in June.
Continuing professional development for school staff is a key part of the project and each school takes part in a whole school teacher training day. The focus for each school’s project is conceived collaboratively by the artists and teachers.
