Insight: The Digitisation of the Tate Collection
Special imaging treatments
Tate Insight moved beyond static 2D representation to experiment with new ways of presenting some of our more challenging works.
Supported by the New Opportunities Fund 'NOF-digitise' programme.
Variable Light

© 2003 National Gallery, London. All rights reserved
Our third treatment looks at the effect of variable light sources on two paintings by Frank Auerbach; Small Head of E.O.W. (1957–8) and Rimbaud (1976).
This remarkable tool allows the user to reveal texture and depth to these paintings not normally visible under gallery conditions.
Rachel Whiteread Installation Film
The time-lapse film of the installation of Rachel Whiteread's Untitled (Rooms) (2001) and Untitled (Stairs) (2001) is the second of our 'special imaging treatments'.
We hope this innovative and unusual approach to documenting the installation process allows you to make new discoveries about these monumental works.
Henry Moore 3D view

The work illustrated is reproduced by permission of the Henry Moore Foundation
The first of our pilot treatments was a 3D examination of Henry Moore's large stone Recumbent Figure.
This innovative and highly accurate presentation of the sculpture makes full use of broadband internet capabilities to allow you to explore the virtual work from all angles – including underneath – none of which would be possible with the real object.
