Marlene Dumas Alan Turing Limited Edition print

In the film The Imitation Game the actor Benedict Cumberbatch plays the role of Alan Turing. The role has led to an Oscar nomination for the actor, the results of which will be announced at the ceremony this Sunday night. Marlene Dumas recently produced a limited edition with Tate to accompany her exhibition Marlene Dumas: The Image As Burden.

The artwork, Alan Turing, 2015 depicts the computer scientist, mathematician, philosopher and multi-disciplinarian. The work is part of an ongoing series Great Men, ink-wash drawings depicting notable homosexual men from across the nineteenth and twentieth centuries alongside brief biographies of each figure. The series was created in reaction to the recent political situation in Russia, where the promotion of homosexuality is illegal, and first exhibited there in Manifesta 2014.

This is the third article in our Close up series on artworks on display in our Marlene Dumas exhibition

Marlene Dumas: The Image as Burden is on display at Tate Modern from 5 February - 10 May 2015
