At the beginning of the 20th century photographers like Rodchenko were saying to make a portrait of somebody you’d have to have lots and lots and lots of snapshots and see them in lots of different moments. I think this is an amazing portrait.
It’s interesting because it’s a portrait of somebody working, and that is something that’s quite unusual. You have many documentary images of labour, but it’s very unusual to have a portrait which is really about work at the same time.
You’re seeing him doing things, you’re seeing him, in between moments, you’re seeing him relaxed, very, very intense. So the combination of all the images is a very impressive kind of portraiture.
