Behind the towers of concrete and gentle rumbles of the Tate Modern Project site lays a piece of art that you may not be all that familiar with. Created by artists Heather and Ivan Morison, Skirt of the Black Mouth began as a new approach to the traditional hoarding, using it as a sculptural element to redefine the space, while allowing glimpses of what lies behind. Characterised by a distinctively twisted arrangement of the wall, bench and path, it is a space stolen back from the construction site, dividing one world from another.

This living piece of art is now playing home to another; our new Botanical Bar. To make the most of the summer (finally, it’s here!) we’ve teamed up with design practice Something & Son to create a provocative and witty work that responds to the space. Something & Son are responsible for exciting creations such as the Barking Bathhouse and the Compost Tea Bar at the V&A as well as working with organisations that range from the London Festival of Architecture in London to the Gwangju Design Biennale, South Korea

At Tate they’ve created a structure that draws its design inspiration from Baroque architecture styles and utilises ultra modern construction techniques such as 3D printing. The result? A beautiful Botanical Bar located on the southern landscape of Tate Modern at Sumner Street, open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 17.00 – 21.00 until 28 September 2013.

We’ll be serving up our very own Tate Gin blended in partnership with Sacred, an award winning London based micro-distiller. Our bar team has created a unique blend which draws from a range of organically sourced botanicals such as classics like juniper and the more exotic star anise and Boswellia Sacra (a type of frankincense). Created with the quintessentially British G&T in mind our team have also fashioned a bespoke cocktail. The exclusive ‘Gin Skirt’ contains Strega, elderflower, lemon juice and passionfruit, perfect for supping on a summers evening with friends. Will you go down to the Skirt today?
