Tate curator, Philippa Simpson, gives an insightful reading of this painting, revealing the choices that the artist made to achieve his climatic composition.

In this series of short films, Tate celebrates The Google Art Project, a unique collaboration with some of the world’s most acclaimed art museums that enable people to discover and view more than a thousand artworks online in extraordinary detail. These pairs of short films approach four famous works from Tate’s collection - which feature in the online project - from both personal and curatorial perspectives. The viewer is invited to learn more about the work in a traditional art historical context, but also encouraged to access the work through personal histories that uniquely relate to the subject of the painting.
