Focusing on his recent work, this conversation with Artist, art historian and critic Lucy Soutter, will explore Serrano's unique conceptual approach to photographic portraiture, where the sitter becomes a symbolic icon.

Celebrated artist Andres Serrano became the centre of controversy in 1989 for Piss Christ, a graphic image that combined Catholic iconography and body fluids. The scandal that this work - alongside Mapplethorpe’s homo erotic imagery - provoked, resulted in major funding cuts by the US National Endowment of the Arts. Subsequently, Serrano developed an interesting body of work as a conceptual photographer turning his lens to disturbing issues by means of an elegant style, devoided of direct political messages.
