Also a painter herself, Françoise Gilot recounts the time that Picasso took her to the south of France to meet her hero, Henri Matisse. Explaining that what drew her to his vibrant work, Gilot said it was his ‘desire for finding the strongest and most simple way of expressing form and character.’
