It is almost impossible to imagine what pop music would sound like if Kraftwerk hadn’t existed. There has always been an incredibly strong visual side to what Kraftwerk do, the way they were photographed, the clothes they wore, it all sort of went together to create an image which is really, utterly unlike any other band.
Electronic music tends to date; visions of the future tend to date. Kraftwerk’s music hasn’t dated; actually melodically it’s totally timeless. Also their songs express this kind of wide-eyed wonder. They write songs about motorways, radios, trains. They are amazing live, there’s something slightly ineffable about Kraftwerk. I don’t know why four middle aged men standing in front of laptops is so incredibly exciting and kind of weirdly moving in a way when you see it, but it is, it absolutely is.
