My name is Mika Rottenberg, I am an artist, I am based in New York. This is my piece, Mary’s Cherries. Basically it’s this kind of factory, office/factory, to make maraschino cherries out of fingernails. On the top floor there is one of the workers of the factory and there is a light on her hand, like a growing light, and that makes her fingers grow red and faster so it kind of expedites the whole process. This is actually done by the two workers at the bottom: the pedal and their energy creates this light, the growing light, like a plant light that makes the hand produce the fingernails. They drop them… [Clip from the video] “Mary… Rose.” And I was fascinated how it’s almost like the same thing, just the idea of decorating the finger and decorating like a drink or something, and how it just kind of looks like the same material. The way I cast my videos is I find people that have websites, like personal websites, and a lot of them they kind of hire their services. In this case there are all wrestlers, like fantasy wrestlers, so they are hired to wrestle with guys. Usually they are supposed to win, so they are not real wrestlers. [Clip from the video] “Rose…Rose.” Different things that I thought about: first the state of using part of the body as a kind of territory for growing something on it, which is kind of uncanny and creepy. I wanted to think about it a bit like a motion study or something, so I would like throw stuff to them and like kind of watch them catch it, and it would be something kind of creepy just about even the situation of me with the camera and them in that space. But it was funny: it was almost like I invited them to play with me or something in this, like, weird place.
