About

British art in the 1990s was epitomised by a spirit of experimentation. As part of the YBA generation, Tracey Emin and Sarah Lucas opened the ‘The Shop’ in 1993, a project created for marketing their work. For six months they rented a space, formerly a doctor’s surgery, in east London’s Bethnal Green Road, where they made and sold solo and collaborative work. In this event, Tracey Emin discusses the project coinciding with the inclusion of the shop’s ephemera in the exhibition Pop Life: Art in a Material World, which celebrates artists’ public persona as a product, and their relationship with commerce and glamour.
