PAULINA: My name is Paulina Olowska and this is Bonnie Camplin. We are in the oil tanks of Tate Modern, preparing a performance that is called ‘Usher We (Down There)’. The performance is taking place in the old basement of Tate Modern. The oil tanks are left over from the time that the Tate modern used to be a power station. In 2012 they will be turned into another wing of the Tate Modern gallery. We were kind of completely horrified how to be working with this space, because the space is overwhelming We decided that the space is so haunting and so beautiful that we would want to amplify as much as we could, the feeling of what we saw, but making slight additions to the space. When the visitors arrive they will get health and safety information, and then they will get introduced to the idea where they are going and they have to wear health and safety gear. Then the next step is that they are being introduced to us as the guidance. Our main role in this performance is being the ushers; we are guiding people through the space. The tour is taken in complete silence, all our visitors are being lead and pointed by Bonnie, by using light, by switching on certain light and certain spaces. In certain very moldy places we had put some moss. There are beautiful canals that used to be full of water but now they are full of leftovers, from cups of the 1960s to some wood and some damp. We also prepared a drawing on the table of an imaginary woman that she could be probably be a kind of muse for this space - she us made out of charcoal and there are pieces of charcoal dropped on them. There are some posters to kind of manifest tanks as a place of like secret gathering or secret meetings. There is a lot of play on light and shadow and how one can use this amazing technology of lighting. We slightly altered some of the lights inside. Also we had kind of pointed to things because we found that there was kind of goldish dust on there, on the ground. We pointed a huge Hollywood light on the dust so one sees this kind of strange reflection. To make thing slightly funnier we edit even one little tiny Fraggle in the space. INTERVIEWER: Which Fraggle is it? PAULINA (TO BONNIE): You say… BONNIE: Wembley… PAULINA: Because Bonnie is from Wembley. Release date in this format: 12/11/2008.
