Book Illustrations
Turner's public fame grew from the wide distribution of his print series and book illustrations as well as through the exhibition of his paintings and watercolours. Particularly popular were his illustrations for the poetic works of Samuel Rogers (1763-1855), Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832), Lord Byron (1788-1824), and Thomas Campbell (1774-1844). Though the books are illustrated with black-and-white prints, Turner made vividly coloured watercolours as guides for the printmakers, challenging their skills in translating the effects of colour into black and white lines. Turner handpicked a team of specialist printmakers to work with him, and the prints are sensitive translations of his works.
