Students from the South Holderness Technology College participated in a two-day workshop with artist Emily Allchurch.
Students used the online Tate collection to identify historic paintings that tell a story of their times. Having selected these, they looked at how the artists had used composition, colour and clues within the work to express their point of view. The group imagined its impact at the time and discussed how the works communicate with us today.
The aim of the workshop was to create contemporary time capsules, visually communicating what it is like to be a student or a teenager today.
Combining painting, photography and Photoshop, the students created poignant collages capturing their personal insight into contemporary society and their place within it.
The workshop activity was devised by Emily Allchurch for the Bigger Picture group. You can join this group and submit your own contributions by following the free downloadable activity from The History and Memory activity pack 2 in the Resource section.
