Gugulective

Gugulective is a contemporary art collective founded in 2006 in Gugulethu, a township near Cape Town, South Africa, who believe in art as an instrument for social change

Many of the group’s members grew up in Gugulethu, an area that was originally established to accommodate the migrant workers of Cape Town. The group consists of musicians, artists, writers, DJs, rappers and poets. Gugulective collaborate with local communities to empower them through art.

Current members include ZiphozeNkosi Dayile, Athi Mongezeleli Joja, Ayanda Kilimane, Kemang Wa Lehulere, Khanyisile Mbongwa, Dathini Mzayiya. The multi-media artist and co-founder of Gugulective, Unathi Sigenu died in 2013.
