What We Did
Belle Vue children based their work on the school sculpture trail. First, they each selected their favourite sculpture and took digital photographs. They used their photographs to make their press print tiles showing the line and texture they observed. Next they made mono prints in a colour they thought best represented their sculpture. They combined some of their printing to add interesting detail along with tonal washes they painted, resulting in these delightful collages.
The children from St Barnabas School used their own school, to create pictures of the grounds and wider area by sitting in a circle and facing outwards to see all aspects of the immediate and wider surroundings. The children drew what they could see directly in front of them from sky to ground level. From this they gained a 360 degree picture.
Work by Belle-Vue students:

Aztec Head by Padraig, age 7
Padraig took a digital photograph of the head of the sculpture Chac Mool, a South American Aztec figure. This is his collage.
|

Belle Vueing by Chloe, age 6
Looking through the eyes of this huge indian Chief, the children can see part of the school grounds and into the park and local area beyond.
Chloe chose to do a collage of its profile to match her digital image.
|

Dove held by Chac Mool by Jemma, age 7
Jemma focused on the hand of Chac Mool holding a dove as an offering to the Rain Gods. Can you see the beautiful detail she used for the wings?
|

Crystal Fountain by Hannah, age 7
Hannah chose to use silver and turquoise for her collage to represent this Chinese fountain which glistens and gleams as water cascades from the fishes mouth.
|

Seed Pod by Matthew, age 7
The Seed Pod is an Indian fertility symbol though Matthew prefers to call it 'jelly fish'!
He enjoys exploring his favourite sculpture using his senses and can often be seen sitting on top of it!

Final Thoughts
Belle-Vue:
We are excited about sharing our sculpture trail with our partner school in Bristol and possibly the whole world! We had fun taking our digital photographs and we are proud of our collages. We hope at the Tate Gallery everyone thinks we are real artists. Participating in a project like this has helped us to take a fresh look at our Sculpture Trail and to appreciate how lucky we all are to have this fantastic resource at our finger tips and to be able to share it with others. Thank you to the children at St Barnabas School for being our partners in this exciting project.
St Barnabas:
We have really enjoyed working with our partner school and were interested and excited to see what children in a different part of the country had been doing. We were interested in how we carried out different activities to meet the same task. It was good to see what other schools are like. We enjoyed using the digital camera and e mailing our work to share. We have enjoyed looking at our school and have learnt that we sometimes take things for granted and forget how special and where we live really is.
Teachers:
We look forward to reading our e mails from our partner school. We feel that ICT, Art, Geography and awe and wonder have been effectively developed through this project.
St Barnabas School feels that the children who have been engaged in the task and activities have learnt that there are many different places in the UK and that they often contrast with our own surroundings.
