What We Did

We took aspects of our local areas that really summed up what our local area was about. We took photos of landmarks from both areas, downloaded them on the PC and wrote sentences about what the photos were of. Cranleigh Court then did pastel drawings of some of the landmarks and Mount Pleasant went to the Black Country museum to take more photographs to tell the story of the Black Country and what the heritage of our area was about.

Final Thoughts

Mount Pleasant: We enjoyed looking at what another area of the country looked like. As part of the Geography unit in year 2, 'Where in the world is Barnaby Bear?,' we have studied maps and it was interesting to link actual pictures to where it was on the map! We were excited to see if the other school had e-mailed us that day and we were very keen to share the work we had done about our area. The children learned a lot more about their local heritage and were proud to share it with the children in Yate, South Gloucs.

Cranleigh Court: We are a Year Two class in Yate and have been working with another Year Two class at Mount Pleasant Primary School in Dudley. We have enjoyed working with another class in a different part of the country, it has been very exciting sending and receiving our work.

We decided to draw pictures using pastels of our local area and to use the computer to write about these places. Lots of us were very keen to write about the skate-park and the athletics ground.

We used lots of ICT as part of this project: digital cameras to take the photos; a scanner to scan our pastel pictures; word-processing packages to write and edit our work and email to send our work to Mount Pleasant.

We have learned many things about the area Mount Pleasant is in. It is called the Black Country because the smoke that used to be produced by the coalmining and chainmaking industry. Canal boats were used to transport the coal, which were pulled along by huge horses! There are still coalmines today where today you can go in to watch concerts! We would like to visit Dudley one day!

Teachers: We have enjoyed our time linking with another school and found it linked very nicely with our Geography unit.
