What We Did

Reading Golf Course
Reading Golf Course by Chloe, Jamie and Ellis, age 8
We chose to create the golf course because it is behind our school. We made it by sponging paint onto the paper.

St Barnabas Church
St Barnabas Church by Chloe, Rebecca and Emily, age 8
We choose to do this project because our school is right next to this church and we always see it on our journey to school. St Barnabas church is number 20 on St Barnabas road and the Vicar is Reverend Derek Chandler.

Our School Family Tree
Our School Family Tree by Leanne, Hannah and Shanice, age 8
We decided to create a piece of artwork which showed the school family tree. We used leaves found around the school for the templates.

The Emmer Green Sign
The Emmer Green Sign by Emily, Andi, Chloe, Sarah and Natisha, age 8
The Emmer Green sign is a wooden sculpture in the centre of the village. On it shows the local history of Emmer Green and present day places in Emmer Green. We decided to make the Emmer Green sign because we learnt a lot about it in our topic lessons.

The Chalk Mines
The Chalk Mines by Jodie, Brannon and Lucy, age 8
We made this art work using chalks onto black paper. The Village of Emmer Green is built upon a chalk mine.

Our Houses
Our Houses by Megan, Joshua, Chris and Sarah, age 8
We choose this art project because we wanted to show people what our houses in Emmer Green look like.

The Red Kite
The Red Kite by Grace, Luke and Lydia, age 8
We are representing the Red Kite that often can be seen circling above our school. It is made from paper mache.

Muntjack Deer
Muntjack Deer by Eleanor, Millie and Isobel, age 8
This is a Muntjack Deer, they are very rare around Reading, but we are often lucky enough to see them in the allotments next to our school.

The Emmer Green School Sign
The Emmer Green School Sign by Charlotte, Angelina and Hannah, age 8
We choose to do this because it is the symbol of our school. The sign is made up from oak leaves because we have lots of Oak trees in our school grounds.

Emmer Green Duck

The Coloured Schools
The Coloured Schools by Maytal, Louise and Shareen, age 8
We chose this project to represent the schools in Emmer Green. The blue print shows our school Emmer Green which is the primary school and the yellow print shows Highdown school which is the Secondary school.

Final Thoughts

Students: We have really enjoyed doing this art project. We were able to choose a part of Emmer Green that we were interested in and make a piece of artwork from it. We had to do lots of work to plan and design our project like going to look at our building and doing observational drawings. We also got to experiment with the materials which we were planning to use. The making of the artwork was great fun as we got to use art techniques that we hadn't used before. We enjoyed working in groups and quickly learnt how important it was to work well together.

Teacher: This project linked to our Topic of 'Our Local Area', where we studied Emmer Green in great detail. We looked at the history of the village and how it has changed in the last 100 years. The children grew familiar with local buildings and attributes of the area. They used this knowledge to inspire them to design and create their artwork. The project allowed the children experience a wide range of art techniques which they found thoroughly enjoyable. It also encouraged the children to work in collaboration. It was inspiring to see the children taking ownership of appearance of the art gallery.
